Annual Public Interest Law Foundation Auction to Be Held March 9, 2010

Major Two-Day Poverty Law Conference Set for March 19-20 at Golden Gate Law
The School of Law and Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) are co-hosting a major Poverty Law Conference on campus March 19-20, 2010. Jesse Carter Program on April 1 Features Film on Former Calif. Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso and Panel with Hons. Reynoso & Joseph Grodin, Attorney James Brosnahan, Advocate Jose Padilla & Filmmaker Abby Ginzberg
The 2010 Jesse Carter Distinguished Lecture Series Program presents a screening of the documentary Cruz Reynoso: Sowing the Seeds of Justice, which features commentary by many noted leaders in the legal community, including School of Law Dean Drucilla Stender Ramey. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with former California Supreme Court Justices Cruz Reynoso and Joseph Grodin; Morrison and Foerster Partner James Brosnahan; Jose Padilla, Executive Director of California Rural Legal Assistance; and filmmaker Abby Ginzberg and moderated by Dean Ramey. Golden Gate Reaches Quarterfinal Round at Moot Court Competition on Gender Identity Law
Golden Gate students Caleb Arring, Julia Hyde, and Carrie Wipplinger made it to the quarterfinal round of the Sixth Annual Williams Institute Moot Court Competition on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law, which took place at the UCLA School of Law in late January. Visiting Professor Diane Klein coached the team for this prestigious competition, which included 30 teams from 23 schools.

Environmental Law & Justice Clinic (ELJC) Receives Major Cy Pres Award
The ELJC has received a $300,000 cy pres distribution resulting from the settlement of a San Francisco Superior Court class action case against smokeless tobacco. The court approved the cy pres award as part of the distribution plan for settlement money that became available, largely as a result of amounts unclaimed by class members.

Law Students Raise Funds for Victims of Haiti Earthquake; University Trustees Match Effort
In response to the tragedy in Haiti following the devastating earthquake on January 12, the GGU Student Bar Association Board has commenced a "Shine for Haiti" campaign, with the goal of raising over $10,000 for relief efforts. The campaign has included a variety of events and programs, including "Haitian Education" town hall meeting on January 27. Golden Gate Named First NAWJ Landmark Sponsor Law School
The School of Law is the first-ever National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) Landmark Sponsor Law School, joining an array of major law firms and corporations that have served as NAWJ Landmark Sponsors. The arrangement, underwritten by alumna and attorney Amy Eskin (JD 86), will enable Eskin, who serves on the NAWJ Resource Board, along with one member of the School of Law faculty to attend the association's annual and regional meetings in 2010.

Adjunct Faculty Member Named Senior Attorney at Environmental Defense Fund
Cynthia Koehler, who teaches Water Law at Golden Gate and is a past president of the Marin Municipal Water District Board, has been named senior attorney and California water legislative director for Environmental Defense Fund. For more about her new position and background in water law, see EDF.

Former Golden Gate Law Clinic Associate Director Donna Ryu Appointed Magistrate Judge
Donna Ryu, a former associate director of the School of Law Women's Employment Rights Clinic and adjunct professor at Golden Gate, has been appointed a magistrate judge. See press release at
